Lavender Wings of Inspiration

Lavender Wings of Inspiration

poem by Alice Jane-Marie Massa

While you, dear writer friend, were waiting for inspiration–

the beautiful, lavender-winged butterfly of inspiration–

I was writing.

While you, dear writer friend, were hoping for inspiration–

the easy flow of a muse’s ethereal cape–

I was sitting at my desk, composing the first draft.

While you, dear writer friend, were reaching for inspiration–

the multi-colored flower-filled basket of ideas–

I was revising my document.

I do not wait for inspiration:

Through each breath of respiration, I inhale words, ideas, creative aspirations.

I do not delay:  I write each day–

no matter the forecast for inspiration.

Writing is within my being:

I need not wait for inspiration.

all I need are an observant ear, a memory tear,

treasures from the past, traces of the present,

precious Time, and solitude at the keyboard of my computer.

Then, with or without the lavender wings of inspiration,

I write .

Dear writer friend,

do not wait for the lavender wings of inspiration.

Write with all that you have been,

all that you are, and

all that you hope to be.

Write, write well, write often;

and you will be a writer.

Oh, Alice. Your wise words are so on target. It’s the same thing we always said to kids; just start putting your pencil on the paper! But you just said it in such lovely and inspirational way. How clever of you to include this smart advice in a beautiful poem.

I hope that you and Willow are well and enjoying a few days of milder weather.

    • Hello, Fran–How very nice to have such a comment from a fellow
teacher!  Your kind words are greatly appreciated.

Willow and I just returned from a two-plus-mile walk and are so
grateful that this winter has been relatively mild, with very little
      snow and practically no ice.

Hoping all is well at your house!

      Take care–Alice and Willow

  4. Thank you again for the beautiful and inspiring words. This is very helpful to me as a new writer and I will continue to Think of you as one of my mentors.
See you soon at one of the writing groups that we both attend.
    Love, Rebeca and Family
